Don't rub the nail polish around, don't use soap and water, don't use paper towels or napkins.
If the nail polish is wet, the first thing is to dab nail polish remover on a small white cloth, then rub the fibers of the carpet in the cloth.
After this step move onto the step below.
When the nail polish is dry, get an open razor, or a box cutter, and go fiber by fiber and cut out the nail polish from the carpet. Nail polish will tend to dry near the top of the carpet, only about 1 millimeter of a typical fiber will be affected. Think of like trimming the burrs from a dog's fur.
The net effect will be a bit of balding on the carpet, which no one will notice. But the most important thing to remember is not to rub the carpet, when the nail polish is wet.
